Description:
The Albany Medical College-The Graduate College of Union University Master's of Science in Bioethics program is designed to provide formal distance and campus-based education in bioethics for doctors, healthcare administrators, lawyers, nurses, pharmacists, and students enrolled in professional and graduate programs. Its mission is to provide quality graduate education in bioethics to individuals who, because of the demands of work or obstacles of distance, are unable to participate in campus-based programs. The twelve-course curriculum is based on the Core Competencies for Clinical Ethics Consultation developed by the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities. The program starts with an intensive two-week summer proseminar on Health and Human Values taught at Albany Medical College and The Graduate College of Union University. After completing this seminar students take four core courses online (health policy, bioethics, clinical ethics and health law), supplemented by two elective online courses, a required online practicum, and a two-term masters project. Additionally a clinical ethics practicum, and a two-week capstone seminar are required. Practica are taught at medical institutions affiliated with the program through the Northeast Bioethics Consortium. The capstone is taught during a two-week period at Albany Medical College-The Graduate College of Union University. A student taking four courses per year (one per trimester plus one summer term) should complete the program in three years. Online courses are offered on the Blackboard Platform which students are trained to use during the initial proseminar.
