Description:
Since its inception in the 1920?s, Duke University has been a major center for graduate education in political science. The Department aims, now as in earlier years, to integrate normative, empirical, theoretical, and policy concerns. More than many other Departments, it insists on breadth and well-roundedness in its graduates. At the same time, it strongly encourages and assists early concentration on professional research and publication. Both goals are served by close and supportive relations with the faculty and with other students. Ordinarily about 10-12 new graduate students enter each year. The ratio of students in residence to faculty is approximately 2:1.

Description:
Professional two-year degree program leading to Master of Public Policy. Prepares students for diverse leadership roles in the public, private and nonprofit sections. MPP candidates also may earn joint professional degrees with public policy and law, business, divinity, medicine or environment through cooperative relationships with professional schools at Duke and other universities; optional concentrations in global public policy and social policy. Core curriculum combines economics and quantitative analysis with political analysis and ethics. Students learn how to use policy analysis techniques to address complex problems, to appreciate the role of politics and ethics in reconciling conflicting values, and to think strategically and comprehensively. Between the first and second years of study, MPP students participate in real-world internships to apply their analytical skills and knowledge, and to focus their career interests. A yearlong final masters project (thesis) provides students with the opportunity to conduct in-depth analysis of real-world policy issues.
