Description:
The purpose of the M.S./Ph.D. program in Experimental Psychology is to train highly qualified students for careers in university, business, industry, and community settings. This program is designed around an apprenticeship model in which students and their major professors design training plans to meet the individual student's expectations and career goals. During the first two years, all M.S./Ph.D. students participate in a course designed to provide comprehensive exposure to theoretical and empirical issues in psychology; a course in research design and methodology; a course in statistics; and introductory courses in their specialty area. After the first year, students participate in advanced courses, seminars, and research practica, which become increasingly specialized. All students are expected to affiliate with at least one research group during each year and to maintain active research involvement each semester. Students are expected to take more responsibility for formulating and conducting scientific inquiries and for preparing reports for the scientific community as their training progresses.

The doctoral concentration in School Psychology was approved in 1991. The program of studies and experiences was designed to be consistent with the accreditation guidelines of both the American Psychological Association and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education/National Association of School Psychologists. The program provides a balance of practitioner and research orientations, courses, and experiences. In contrast to the MA/Ed.S. program, the Ph.D. concentration has a much stronger focus on research. The program is offered collaboratively with the College of Education and coursework from both areas is required. The program is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists and is part of the accredited education unit by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE); also, the sequence is approved by the Tennessee State Department of Education and leads to that agency’s licensure in school psychology. Students entering the program must complete the MA and the EdS to obtain licensure. The EdS degree is an advanced sequence in the specialty and is pursued only by persons who have completed the M.A. degree or comparable degree with a concentration in school psychology, or who already hold school psychology credentials.

The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing provides studies in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. In addition to writingworkshops, students take courses in literature and in the theory of writing, including English language and linguistics. A book-length thesis of publishable quality is required; it will be directed by a member of the M.F.A. faculty. The M.F.A. requires 48 graduate semester hours, with a 3.00 grade point average in all graduate courses.
